Joel Veness

About

I am a 27 year old UNSW Computer Science research student. In my free time, I enjoy playing tennis, chess, poker, watching cricket and reading science fiction.

In a previous life, I worked as a Software Engineer. I like programming, but at this stage I have no plans of relinquishing the freedom that comes with research.

PhD Work

I am investigating ways to scale down and approximate Marcus Hutter's AIXI agent, a Bayesian optimality notion for reinforcement learning. I plan to finish my thesis late 2010. Please see my list of publications for more detail.

I grew up in Western Sydney, moving to Sydney in 2001 to study at university. I now live in Sydney with my fiancée.
